Last year the newly created position of VP Welfare & Campaigns was introduced as a new role within the SU Elections.

This position requires an individual to be the forefront of SU campaigning, making sure the support and services around us are up to standard.  Whilst also being held responsible with consulting students and develop policies, actions and campaigns primed by students’ needs and concerns.

Ed Bending took on the role of VP Wellbeing in 2010-12 (two years in office) after his friend persuaded him to get elected as a part time officer in his first year of studies.

“I also chose this role as I was very keen on pushing the sustainability agenda at the university as well as helping students break down any barriers to education”

During Ed’s term in office many external changes were happening creating changes that would be brought in, affectively altering the way education was provided.

“With the introduction of the £9000 fees I wanted to be involved in the debate and represent the views of Brighton students on a national scale.”

On sharing his memories with his time working within the SU he described his favorite moments that have stuck with him since.

“Being a part of a national movement and attending the National Conference in order to both represent Brighton students and hear about the great work being done elsewhere was brilliant”

“It would be hard for me to mention what the day to day duties are in this role, but I can say that there is never two days alike! That’s one of the joys of the job”
