Nearly 70% of the appeals we deal with are students who didn’t ask for help at the time they needed it and then have to go through the pain and hassle of being told they have failed.

Every year Brighton SU’s Support Service help 100’s of students gain extensions, make appeals, raise and resolve complaints, as well as assisting those facing accusations of academic misconduct.

If something has affected your ability to do your best work, you should think about submitting mitigating circumstances or asking for an extension.

If there are factors beyond your control that are affecting your ability to complete an assessed piece of work on time or to your best ability, or take an examination, you can claim mitigating circumstances or apply for an extension to a deadline. Both of these will help you to smooth out some of the worries you may have.

If things are not running as smoothly as you'd like, don't fret: there is plenty of support available to help you get back on track.

We've provided information below, but please contact us (bsusupportservice@brighton.ac.uk) for one-to-one advice about your specific situation. For more information on mitigating circumstances or extensions, consult your Student Support & Guidance Tutor, the Students’ Union Support Service, a student adviser or the regulations section of the Student Contract.
