UNION AWARDS
Brighton Students' Union Awards is a student-led volunteering and teaching awards which celebrates the people and practices which add real value to the quality of university life. We are seeking to put a spotlight on and champion the outstanding contributions students and university staff make to the quality and fabric of university life.

This award is to recognise a member of SU student staff who has exceeded the expectations of their role and gone above and beyond. They will have worked hard to deliver excellent service and their efforts will have made a positive impact on their peers and the Students' Union.

ELLA MATHIOT
Ella is our Communications Associate and during every shift produces work to such a high standard that continually impresses. Ella is always positive, a pleasure to work with and inspires others with her creative ideas and insight on how to engage our students across our platforms from developing our Instagram to creating engaging blog content.

Lou Bennett
Lou is a Duty Manager for our Students’ Union bar in Eastbourne, The Starting Gate. Despite the challenges this year, Lou has continued to excel in her role and goes above and beyond during every shift to make sure students have an enjoyable experience.

This award is to recognise a society who has gone above and beyond to create a positive community for their members by running successful events and/or activities and engaging with Brighton Students' Union and the wider university.
Consider these points when nominating a society for this award:
- Have they engaged their members in frequent and varied activities and events?
- Have they successfully collaborated with other societies or departments within Brighton SU?
- Have they shown commitment to develop the society and make it sustainable?
- Have they made a positive contribution to their members’ overall university experience?

PARAMEDIC SOCIETY
Rebooted 18 months ago, they are the first to reach ‘Outstanding Society’ this academic year and have over 80 engaged members! They also create regular events that are well organised and relevant to their members, including monthly talks on various health-care related topics. In April they teamed up with Nursing Society for an amazing Black Tie Ball, where over 250 students attended and they raised £1,400 for Air Ambulance Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

This award is to celebrate someone who has gone above and beyond in their duties as a Rep. The winner of this award will be highly committed to their role, engage with relevant meetings and maintain contact with their peers, academic staff and the Students’ Union.

- Do they work towards creating change for their peers?
- Do they work in partnership with Brighton SU?

SOPHIE BUCK
Sophie is a Course Rep for English Literature and Creative Writing. Sophie has stepped up to not only represent students on a course level, but also has had the passion and dedication to help start the Creative Writing Society. Also, she has set up a peer mentor system within the course for second and third years to support new students in their first year of study.

This award is to celebrate someone who has gone above and beyond in their duties as a Rep. The winner of this award will be highly committed to their role, engage with relevant meetings and maintain contact with their peers, academic staff and the Students’ Union.

Cameron Paine and Mark Raeburn
Cameron and Mark- part of the Central Media Services team- are a huge support to students based on the Moulsecoomb campus including Brighton SU’s student radio station, Buzz Radio. From lending equipment and providing technical on-hand support and advice, they always go above and beyond to help students and staff have the right knowledge and skills to get the best quality outcome they possibly can.

This award recognises the individual that has gone above and beyond whilst volunteering on Students’ Union projects. Whether they are helping to deliver our welfare projects or working to improve our clubs and societies this student has shown a passion for improving the student community.

- Have they demonstrated a high level of commitment and dedication to their volunteering role(s)?
- Are they reliable? Have they worked hard to fulfil their role to the best of their ability?

Siham Ziada
Siham is the current President of the Islamic Society (ISOC) and an ambassador for Islamic students at the University. From campaigning on improving the prayer space on campus to leading the society to raise money for charity; Siham has been the figurehead of ISOC whilst showing solidarity to members of their communities around the world. And led a powerful vigil for the victims of the New Zealand attacks a public display of bringing the University community together.
1 award, across all campuses, to a University of Brighton school. Students and staff nominate and a panel decides.
The School of the Year will be awarded to the school that has worked closely with the Students’ Union to encourage and develop student engagement, this may be through developing new and innovative ways for students to co-design their experience or by supporting the effective delivery of student representation through the Course Rep system.
Consider these points when nominating an individual for this award:
- Do they have a commitment to student engagement activities?
- Have they helped to recruit and support Course Reps?
- Do they work in partnership with Brighton SU?

School of Education
School of Education have really shone this year, with their recent Ofsted grading of outstanding (well done!). They’re always willing to receive feedback to help develop the school and their offering to students to help improve students’ experiences.

This award recognises inspirational teaching. The winner of the inspirational teaching award will enthuse and motivate students to learn. They will be passionate about their subject and be able impart that passion to their classes.
Consider these points when nominating an individual for this award:
- Are they passionate about their subject?
- Do they motivate their students?
- Do they offer support to students in their studies?

Jo Gould
Jo, senior lecturer in School of Health Sciences, inspires her students to centre their care around women’s wishes by sharing her wealth of experience and stories of being a midwife. Jo provides a mix of interesting presentations and engaging group work which helps create a passionate, supportive and positive learning experience for her students.

This award recognises innovative teaching. Whether it is introducing new technology into the class room, trialling different teaching methods the winner of this award will be passionate about to developing the teaching in their area.

- Do they use new technology or software in their delivery?

Zoe Swan
Zoe, senior lecturer in Brighton Business School, is dedicated to ensuring that students in and outside the classroom have a great experience. From organising wellbeing events and activities to supporting students within the Law Society.
Special award chosen by Awards Panel, awarded to a non-student from the University or local community, who over a number of years had worked closely with the Union to improve the experience of students at the University of Brighton.
Brighton Students’ Union works closely with staff from all over the University and with organisations within the local community on projects aimed to improve the student experience.
This award recognises individuals who have, over a number of years, displayed a passion, drive and commitment to create impactful change that benefits students or has assisted the Students’ Union in achieving our goals.

- Have they contributed to improving the student experience over a number of years?
- Have they worked to support and develop Brighton Students’ Union?

Stephen Denyer and Josh Dawson
Stephen Denyer (former Pro-Vice Chancellor Education and Student Experience) has always been a huge supporter of the Union, even when we could be challenging to the University. They also made sure the Students’ Union was actively involved with important University projects such as the Teaching Excellence Framework and the Curriculum Design Initiative. Before retirement earlier this year, they were a passionate advocate for the student experience, helping us make student life better for all students at the University Brighton.
Josh has been a dedicated and insightful student member of the SU Trustee Board. They’ve been with us on the journey we’ve taken over the past 2 years, and has always been very positive about the potential and future of the SU.
The LaTrivia Grant Award was introduced in 2017 in memory of the Late LaTrivia Grant. LaTrivia was an incredibly active and dedicated Union volunteer and held leadership roles in societies, was an elected Volunteer Officer, a Course Rep, a Campus Action Team member and also working as a student staff member in our Eastbourne office.
LaTrivia’s work and legacy lives on and we wish to continue to honour students who continue to make a difference to student’s lives just like LaTrivia did.
This award has been dedicated to a student who has shown great interest in the Union, what we do and the betterment of student’s life at university of Brighton Students’ Union. This award can be awarded to any student on any of our campuses and this award recognises the student who has outstandingly contributed to a number of union activities throughout their time at University of Brighton.
This award will be chosen by the voting Brighton Students’ Union Award panel and considerations and evidence should be made when nominating candidates in regards to:
- Whether or not the candidate have they contributed to Brighton Students’ Union across a number of areas or projects?
- Whether they have had an impact on the wider student body?
- Have they contributed via events, projects or campaigns?
- Have they gone above and beyond what they have been asked to do or in work they have performed?

Kallan Thomas and Francesca Thornton
Kallan has been an active voice for students and an invaluable resource to the Falmer SU staff team, as well as to the wider Union. Always getting involved with activities from supporting our food co-op to helping us set up events, as a student staff member they go above and beyond to help make student life better.
Francesca has been part of a committee of a popular society, volunteered as a Course Rep, worked in our commercial outlets as a student staff member and participated in our elections! They are always a positive advocate for the SU and representing our values to other students.
