Thu 23 Feb 2023 Interviews to be held in person on Thursday 23rd February 2023 at Moulsecoomb campus. Interview will consist of competency based questions and candidates will be required to deliver a presentation to a panel of managers.

Job Description

Membership Services

  • Provide strategic leadership for all membership areas of BSU.
  • Ensure close collaboration between all membership services and the Officers. 
  • Develop initiatives and activities designed to increase membership engagement.
  • Ensure that all activities and services run under Membership Services are accessible and relevant for students, reacting to insight.
  • Ensure all elections and other democratic processes are run in accordance with the relevant policy and maximise engagement.
  • Advise on short, medium and long term operational developments in line with organisational strategic aims and future planning framework.
  • Create regular reports on membership activities for SMT and the Trustee Board as requested.
  • Work with relevant staff, ensure the development of an effective marketing plan for all membership areas.
  • Work collaboratively with the CEO to train, support and coach elected officers throughout their term of office.
  • Assist the CEO with governance and democracy oversight.
  • Stand in for the Chief Executive at University meetings as and when requested.
  • Maintain an up to date awareness of University and wider policy issues affecting students.
  • Lead on Access and Participation work across the Union.
  • Maintain regular and positive communication with senior internal and relevant external stakeholders.
  • Attend University level meetings, representing and advocating for students as required.
  • Maintain good awareness of GDPR to ensure compliance in all areas of data collection.

 

Senior Management

  • Be a leader and positive role model to staff and students.
  • Be an active member of the BSU Senior Management team and provide constructive input into activities which fall outside of the remit of the role.
  • Provide specialist membership services guidance and advice to the Senior Management Team.
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with relevant University departments and external partners.
  • Act as a representative of BSU within the University community. 
  • Play an active role in the development of BSU’s strategic and operational plans.

 

Line Management

  • Responsible for the recruitment, induction, and ongoing training of all team members, in close liaison with the HR Department.
  • Carry out team member’s formal and informal performance reviews.
  • Responsible for departmental budget income and expenditure.
  • Support Managers in devising and delivering Annual Operational Plans for each area.
  • Ensure any HR issues relating to staff members are dealt with promptly and reported to the HR department – seeking guidance when appropriate.
  • Be an active member of the BSU Management team and provide constructive input into activities which fall outside of the remit of the role.

 

General duties

  • Work in a manner which reflects the values and democratic structure of the Union as shown in the Union’s Articles and Strategic Plan. 
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant legislation, policies, rules and regulations relevant to the role.
  • Adhere to all BSU policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the delivery of a positive image of the Union, both internally and externally by displaying high standards of professionalism, politeness, conduct and service.
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be expected given the qualifications and experience.
  • Participate  in and take ownership of their induction, personal development plan, departmental staff meetings and be responsible for undertaking duties with full regard for others within the conditions of employment detailed in the Staff Handbook.
  • Assist in key events and activities throughout the year eg open days, Freshers’ week and Elections as required.

 

Location

This role will primarily be based at the Moulsecoomb Campus, with regular travel to other campus locations as required in the provision of the duties for the position.

 Experience and Knowledge

 Degree in relevant field, or related qualification, or extensive proven experience

 Extensive experience of working in a not for profit or membership organisation at management level

 Extensive experience of managing a medium sized staff team with a diverse set of roles

 Experience of managing operational budgets

 Experience of finding proactive solutions to issues, on limited resources that deliver high quality results

 Experience influencing positive changes for a group of people

 Experience of creating and delivering an annual operating plan and associated KPIs 

 Detailed knowledge of the current issues impacting higher education students

 Experience creating and delivering organisational wide objectives

 Skills

 Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
