POSTPONED: The referendum ‘Should Brighton SU introduce a 10p levy on high sugar drinks?’

We are very sorry to announce we have to postpone the referendum ‘Should Brighton SU introduce a 10p levy on high sugar drinks?’.

Unfortunately the paper work that was needed to get a Trustee Board resolution was not seen at the last Trustee Board meeting. While we know this is less than ideal and will have implications for both campaigns, it is essential that our processes are followed to the letter. Therefore we have no option but to postpone and restart the process of calling a referendum.

We will now recommend to Board that we move the referendum to 14th – 18th November.

We are unable to do this sooner as we have our autumn elections scheduled to take place at the end of this month. We will also be cancelling the debate scheduled for Thursday and will look to rearrange it for Monday 14th November at 6pm in the Main Hall, Cockcroft.

The new proposed timeline for the referendum will be as follows:

Thursday 27th October - Resolution of Trustees at FARC.

Friday 28th October – Proposed question published and amendments received within 5 days.

Tuesday 1st November – Meeting to discuss any amendments and agree final question.

Tuesday 1st November – Final question published.

Monday 14th November – Voting opens at 10am.

Monday 14th November – Debate, 6pm Cockcroft Hall.

Friday 18th November – Voting closes at 4pm.

Friday 18th November - Results announced at 5pm.

This timeline, or any alterations to it will be agreed by our Board of Trustees. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused to both campaigns.
