By buying a membership for our society you receive insurance for all our events and help us to organise activities that are inclusive to everyone.
The University of Brighton Debating Society is an Outstanding Accreditation Level, active, and welcoming community of individuals committed to discussion and dialogue.
We meet weekly for a series of debates, some casual, some serious, and over the past few years have been steadily growing our membership numbers and the variety of socials we host (for those interested). Members might even learn something, and failing that, might just make a friend or two!
Our society is primarily dedicated to freedom of speech, open debate and critical thinking. We welcome anyone and everyone to take part, regardless of experience level, degree course or political stance. You’ll find that our committee and membership is very diverse in background and opinions but we all have a shared commitment to the society and are willing to try and accommodate anyone who wants to get involved. We debate a range of topics such as morality, politics, philosophy, art, human rights, ideology and current affairs. As a rule of thumb, if it can be debated, we'll debate it!
We're also very excited to have brought a delegation to a Model United Nations in Hamburg in winter, and even though our trip to the Krakow Model United Nations had to be cancelled due to the COVID crisis, we have continued to host debates twice weekly on our Discord server! Contact us for the link, all are welcome!
Our committee has been elected by the members of the society, to organise the running of the society. If you would like to be a committee member next year, look out for information about how to stand in February!
