Karate
Karate is one of the oldest and most popular forms of martial art, first developed over 600 years ago in Japan. Karate is not just a great way to keep fit, but also focuses on training your Character, Sincerity, Effort, Etiquette and Self-control.
Karate conditions both the body and mind, and training through the university is a great way to get involved in sport and meet some fantastic new people.
Who can train?
Anyone is welcome to train with us. The club always attracts a diverse group of people with a complete range of abilities. So whether you’ve trained for years or are a complete beginner, our lessons aim to meet the needs of every participant.
We practice the Shotokan style of Karate, but welcome practitioners from all styles to come and train with us. In fact a number of our members have originated from other styles but all thoroughly enjoy training with the club.
Why Seishin Shotokan Karate Club - Brighton University?

SSKC is a great place to practice karate, we train hard but make sure we have fun while we do it. We are priveleged as well to have regular instruction (and gradings) from Sensei Bob Rhodes, Sensei Jimmy Brennan and Sensei Frank Brennan; some of the most senior Shotokan grades in the world - an experience not to be missed!
In addition our instructor is KUGB certified and regularly trains with the most senior grades in the KUGB himself, giving us a very high standard of teaching.
Perhaps most importantly the club is also a great way to meet new people. We have a number of social events throughout the year including activities like LaserQuest, Paintball, halloween parties, going to the pub, meals out and more; our Christmas social is not to be missed!! We also have a social within the first week of training to welcome you to the club and help you get to know us.
University is a great time to branch out, try new things and meet new people and we think our club is great environment to do that in.
We offer three chances to grade in a year, allowing all our students the opportunity to progress throughout their time at University meaning that students have an opproturntiy to progress through the belts during their time at university.
In addition the club competes at various competitions throughout the year, with great results which we hope to continue in the future. If you want to compete just let us know.
When, where and how much?
There are two training sessions, in the university (we have classes in Cuckfield that you are welcome to join as well), per week at the following times and locations:
Monday: 20:00-21:30, Studio 2, Sports Centre, Falmer Campus, University of Brighton
Friday: 19:30-21:00, Studio 2, Sports Centre, Falmer Campus, University of Brighton
All members normally meet outside studio 2 so just look for the people in big white pyjamas!
Training costs £50 for the first term (includes your white pyjamas and license - details below) and £25/term for the second and third terms (a real bargain) and your first two lessons are free!
Our lessons are open to all levels and abilities and we welcome everyone from complete beginners to black belts.
Please make sure you arrive at sessions on time (or even better early).
You can train as much or as little as you like, but regular training is required in order to grade or compete in competitions.

Click here to open our Sports Clubs first session guide. This will detail how to get involved in sports clubs at the University of Brighton. Some first sessions are trials and some are simply an open first session for you to give something a go.
You can take part in as many clubs as you like and can fit in. You only need to buy one membership which should be for the club that requires the highest category membership. So if you do both a Bronze BUCS and Bronze Off-Site club then you just need a Bronze BUCS card. You only need to buy a membership if you are taking part in a BUCS fixture or you plan to continue to attend after the 31st October (whichever comes first). This gives you a great opportunity to try before you buy. Contact Sport Brighton if you have any questions.
