Semester 2 Statement

 

We are aware that the decision to continue the blended learning experience for Semester 2 is not what most students want to hear, however understandable given the ongoing pandemic we are all living through. We have done this before, and we can do it again - together.

 

We will continue to work closely with the University to provide detailed feedback on your experiences so they can make changes quickly where possible. Please do keep reaching out so we can try and seek resolutions. We know timetabling related issues have persisted in certain schools, and some students are not having the experience they were promised in relation to blended learning due to the quality of online teaching and the absence of campus-based provision in some courses.

 

We have consistently raised challenges you have highlighted with the University, including:

  • For undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, a desire for more live teaching, lack of consistency in recording sessions, requests for campus-based sessions to be live streamed, greater digital support and consistency in the quality and delivery of pre-recorded material.
  • Our postgraduate research students have highlighted they need additional disabilities support, clarity on face-to-face research and travel for research, more tailored mental health support and affordable childcare options, and issues related to access to labs and workspaces.

 

We are pleased with the developing plans in place to support students in isolation, both on and off campus. The University will be releasing all this information shortly, and our own BSU staff have joined the group that are calling students to ensure those affected have all they need.

 

You may have seen reports in the media about students needing to isolate for 2 weeks before returning home for the holidays. While we are awaiting Government confirmation, you will rightly have questions on how this will impact learning that was due to be delivered on campus and what support will be in place. We are working with the University to address this, as well as seeking clarity on arrangements after the break. We also appreciate that for some of our students, returning home is not an option – whether you are estranged, an international student or impacted by other circumstances – and we will ensure you are supported.
