About Us

Socialist Students Brighton is a non-partisan political student society. We welcome all students of all years, from Freshers to PhD students, to come and discuss socialist and left wing ideas in a safe and welcoming space. We engage regularly with other activist groups in and around Brighton, as well as having strong links to the local Trade Union movement. We pride ourselves on our activity, and hold socialist principles to heart.

What is socialism?

Socialism is defined as "a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole." In essence, it means the people of a country should control and have a democratic say in how the country, their workplace and ultimately the world is run. Socialists also pride themselves on another key tenant, that is "each according to their ability, each according to their need." As such, we believe all people, irrespective of race, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, age or ability should have universal suffrage, healthcare and the right to shelter, food, employment and water. There are many variants of socialism and socialist thought, ranging from early Orthodox Socialism in 1800s Europe to modern contemporary socialist thought in nations like Vietnam & Sweden.
