Learn about sprains and strains, blister care, radio communications and is always a good opportunity to improve our skills.
In this competition we competed against 7 other choirs from universities across the country. Our Gospel Choir travelled to Croydon on 6th April to take part in the UGCY 2019. After auditioning towards the end of 2018, we progressed onto the live finals for the second time ever and were so excited to be back! Leading up to the competition, we needed to raise funds towards our travel/food and managed to raise far above that. We took part in the University Crowdfunding scheme alongside holding an open mic fundraiser and managed to raise over £1000 in the short space of around 1 month. The fundraiser was held 1 month before the competition and the crowd fundraising was held for around 2 weeks.

35 (in our choir) but the total number of those at the event was likely over 200 although i don't have an exact figure.
The attendees consisted of family and friends in the audience. They were given the opportunity to vote for their favorite choir alongside the votes of the 4 judges. Our choir members took part in games set up by the organizers during the day, rehearsed for our final performance and socialized with members from other choirs. Although we did not come top 3 during the event, our members found the entire experience extremely enriching whilst our team felt satisfied whilst accomplished arranging our attendance on the day and seeing weeks or planning/preparation end in a successful/enjoyable experience. We loved every minute of the event! We had an amazing open mic fundraiser in which we invited friends of those in the choir to a bar at Sussex campus to share their gifts. Individuals came and sang whilst those watching by invitation or pure chance, voted towards our attendance to UGCY.
As a team, i feel this experience has allowed us to work better as a unit. We have improved n terms of our communication and how we can optimize how efficiently we work together by using each others individual gifts. Personally, i feel i improved my ability to take the lead and make this happen in terms of taking the initiative when required in certain situations. Preparing for UGCY this second time was much smoother than last year which really highlighted our growth as individuals in our team, but also as a choir also.
I feel the overall experience has allowed us as a choir to bond as individuals from such diverse backgrounds. We all really had to pull together to push ourselves on through what was a long day (coach at 7am and arrived back in Brighton the following morning at 1am) but one that went by in a flash because it was so fun. It was invaluable getting to see the smiles on the faces of our choir members, many of which that had never sang on a stage so big yet still have it their all. This opportunity has allowed new relationships to form within our choir and between members of our choir and other individuals attending the event in other choirs. Whilst preparing for UGCY in weeks prior, i was given the opportunity to speak to another choir in Brighton with very experienced directors, building a network we can use in the future. I have loved being able to chat to the wonderful ladies in the SU alongside being able to outreach to our families, friends and Brighton as a whole to raise funds for the competition. The way the individuals in Brighton and outside have come together to support us as students, coming from two separate universities, and make this experience a reality has been a highlight for me personally.
CONGRATULATIONS to Ghanaian Society for winning Society of the Month for March. Here's what they had to say about the event they ran that bagged them the award.
The objective of our event was to celebrate Ghana's 62nd independence day by showcasing a range of acts which represents Ghana in a special way. As well as to unify our members on a significant occasion on March 6th. This was also a collaboration with Sussex Ghana society, which has been established for three years and not many students from Brighton university knew about this society until this momentous collaboration.

All attendees participated by paying a ticketed entry at the door to watch the showcase. The event was £3 for members and £5 for nonmembers. This entry fee included variety of perks such as live performances from the university gospel choir Sound of Zion, who performed an amazing medley incorporating Ghanaian gospel music. Another performance was by a Sussex student who sang a song to welcome us in and to kick off the night. There was a performance by a medical student who delivered a spoken word performance about Ghana and our heritage. One of our own committee members showcased his talent of playing the saxophone were he romanced our ears with a Ghanaian song about love. There was a fashion show which highlighted traditional Ghanaian clothing such as kente in different styles on both male and female models. Followed by this was a performance of the Ghanaian national pledge. Attendees were treated to a scrumptious array of Ghanaian delicacies, this included jollof rice, fried rice, plantain, salad, kenkey, fish, chicken and a variety of drinks which included a top Ghanaian favourite supermalt. As the event came to an end we all came together and began to really celebrate by dancing and singing to hit Ghanaian songs both past and present.
We as a committee learned the importance of organising an event months in advance and carrying it our successfully. I learnt how to put on an event with the goal of everyone having fun because the day was about celebration. I also learnt even more about Ghana especially as two societies came together and we are all from different parts of Ghana everyone brought in their own point of view. I learnt how to deal with sudden last minute changes which eventually worked out and didn't ruin the day. I learnt how to stay calm and not panic on the day as my committee members constantly reassured me and made sure that everything went to plan.
This event greatly benefited students by educating them about the history of Ghana. At the begin of the event there was a short youtube video of how Ghana became independent, what it means to be Ghanaian and what independence day meant to students whilst growing up. They also benefitted by being entertained throughout the whole night, which allowed people to come out of their shells and just have a social experience which mirrored a party that would typically happen for Ghanaians. Students that attended literally got a taste of Ghana in terms of food and to see how special our independence is as we are the first sub-Saharan country to gain independence and hopefully students were able to recognise the importance of this.

As a society our aim was to bring staff and students closer together by hosting a pub quiz which ignited a warm, fun and social atmosphere mixed in with a hint of healthy competition between staff & students.

Both Staff and students that attended the event were engaged in a pub quiz competition, fighting for the all-important 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes – with a £25 amazon voucher for the winning team, further sweetened with the ultimate prize of bragging rights. The winning team this year was “Too Fit To Practise”, with the students defending the title for the 3rd year in a row. Unfortunately, the staff missed out narrowly on finally being able to claim back bragging rights.
We as a committee learned how to plan and organise a successful event, and we learned that the events we run has endless benefits both socially and academically for pharmacy students.
We as a committee believe that any event we organise, it is for the benefit of our fellow students and staff by creating an exciting, friendly and spirit-lifting atmosphere where staff and students can make positive relationships with like-minded people. We believe our events create a better quality of life for our students by providing them with a university social experience which caters to their personal social desires. We try our best to provide something for everyone to get involved in and bring people closer together, no matter what their background may be.

How much we have achieved since starting the society with over 100 members now. And we are one of the pilot scheme universities in the UK (only 10 chosen) chosen by the chartered society of physiotherapy.

I learned that it takes an awful lot of dedication to put on a show. This showcase took over 2 months to make, which included promoting the society (in order to receive members) creating the arrangements of songs, planning a 2 hour rehearsal schedule each week, making the cover art for the Facebook page and programs, setting up a system online to sell tickets and a lot more that you would not even think about..
Our members have put in so much hard work and determination to make this show possible. As well as 2 hour rehearsals once a week, they have been meeting up outside of rehearsal times at people’s houses and extra booked rooms. I have learned that you have to be incredibly organised in order to run a show. You have to sometimes prioritise the show over many other things. However, that did not matter to us, because you can evidently see that every committee member and general society member enjoy what they are doing.
Some of us also gradually learned directing skills, teaching a group of 20 members and putting group numbers together with such a big society. We also learned a lot about ourselves and each other’s abilities and everyone became more confident and happy in their performances. From this experience, I am confident that we can put on an even better show in the future. I have big plans for the society, including putting on another showcase in the spring, and possibly putting on a musical in a bigger theatre next year.
I have seen that this event has benefited our students an incredible amount. It has boosted the confidence of each member in different ways. This society has helped members grow into self-assured performers who have realised that they are doing what they are doing because they enjoy it so much. Some of our members have not performed in years, and this event gave them a chance to show their true self again, and take part in something as a community.
We have grown to be one big family, as cliché as it sounds, and have become best friends through this amazing experience. I have learnt that silly songs and dance numbers can bring a lot of people together. We are also proud to be contributing to the Brighton LGBTQ+ culture heritage by providing a safe space and raising money for such a wonderful charity (Allsorts Youth Project)
This event will also give members experience in musical theatre, which they can include in their CV, helping them for future jobs/auditions. Our musical director, Lizzie Hartree, created all of the arrangements herself for the group numbers, Mia Wallis Humm and myself, Megan Donovan, directed all of the acting involved in the show, and Louisa Koschyk organised and even created some of the backing tracks. This experience will again, help our members in the future.

The objective of charity week was to raise funds for Islamic relief and this was achieved through a variety of events including a FIFA night, girls night, cakes sales from Monday through to Thursday, and a charity auction and dinner to end an amazing week of charitable events.

There was around 100 people for the auction and dinner event which including the likes of Peter Kyle (local MP). Also other representatives from the local community came to share an amazing evening with us. A total of £4590.46 was raised for Islamic Relief which is an amazing figure. For the fifa night there was close to 50 people there and the winner received a prize of fifa 19!
As a committee we all learnt many different things! the main thing was that without good teamwork an event is difficult to organise therefore it is very important we work together to achieve the same goal. I personally learnt that successful events require great organisation skills. I hope all of these events help me in the future when organising events.
The main aim of the events was to bring everyone together in order to raise money for a charity. Everyone did their own little part but a big thank you goes to Sihem, who as the president took the lead and did a lot of the hard work which many people will never see. She deserves credit for all of her hard work and I hope we win this award and a mention has to go to her! :)

A full day conference was held with outside inspirational speakers invited to talk. The conference was titled Empowered Midwives, Empowered Women and the aim was to provide students with the tools to empower birth.

We heard from leaders in our profession who where inspirational. The workshops included, mental health support, aroma therapy, breastfeeding support and continuity of care
It provided training on topics not covered in the formal degree programme, giving valuable tools to students.

The event served as an opportunity to get the Brighton University into the spotlight. This event has given recognition to the University of Brighton, as national and international debate participants. We have also managed to give members of the society an experience in external debates and put their public speaking skills to practice
Being part of this conference is an enriching experience through which one can develop crucial skills whilst having an amazing time and meeting many new and interesting people.
1st to 4th of February, 2018
The conference took place in the University of Birmingham and it included a Ball (as a social event), which took place in Fazeley Studios Birmingham.
Those who took part in the UBIMUN conference numbered in the hundreds with representatives from all over the country taking part in the event. We had 8 people from the Brighton Debating Society, as representatives of the University of Brighton.
The UBIMUN conference is a United Nations style conference and debate. The attendees represented a country as a delegate in their committee. Their job was to vote, debate and defend their countries views during the committee meetings, discussions and while in the process of making resolutions to solve and settle real world problems and current affairs. The delegates were required to make a resolution for a global or regional issues and work together to create solutions while protecting the views and the integrity of their respective nations.
The delegates made speeches, amendments and debated their points to help persuade others to vote in their favour
We learned how to work, operate & debate in a UN committee style debate. We as a group took part in multiple committees across the event and directly represented a country in several debates all with dozens of students from all over the EU such as; The United Nations Security Council, The Crisis Committee, Human Rights Committee & Disarmament And International Security Committee. We represented a range of countries such as; North Korea (DPRK), China, Russia, Bolivia etc. With this hands on experience we felt we benefitted greatly and acquired a lot of useful information about these countries policies and the impact a well addressed point can have on different topics and crises
We worked hard and practiced the whole year to prepare ourselves for external competitions and the members of our society put great efforts towards the improvement of their public speaking skills, so that we can confidently take part in events like these. This event presented an important opportunity to improve on our debating skills and meet a lot of new people and make more friends on our way.
We believe that taking part in this event not only benefited the members of our society, but is also an important move which would help the University of Brighton gain more recognition with external debate boards, as more students will get the opportunity to represent the University.

The objective was to provide law students with a direct contact with barristers and solicitors so they can provide advice on applications, interviews, LPC, BPTC and life as a lawyer which was successfully implemented. Also we had a recruitment organisation down called SEO London who run programs to assist students into gaining admission into top tier organisations.

It a formal fancy soirée, but also a networking opportunity for our students. We had a fantastic list of speakers including Julie Fowlie, Dr Clare Forder, Deborah Francis, DUMI SENDA MSc.whom all delivered eccentric speeches. I also provided a panel session with 1 Crown Office Row which was amazing and insightful. Students were able to ask questions which the speakers answered and network with barristers and solicitors during the ball and at the afterparty. There was also a wine and drink networking segment at the start of the event which allowed students and legal professionals to mingle. This was followed by a phenomenal Hip Hop Dance performance by Street Funk and an afterparty at a venue procured on the Brighton Seafront.
I learnt about life as a barrister and more advice on interview practice. Students learnt about tips for study and what opportunities are available through different sectors
It allows them to identify their employability prospects and motivate them to succeeding in their next stage of their careers.

This was the society's first large-scale performance of the year, giving students to showcase their acting and technical abilities and the culmination of the last five months of hard work. Students have been working tirelessly over the last few months, putting in 9+ hours a week into rehearsals and set design, along with promoting and fundraising for production fees and royalties, along with raising funds in order to enter the annual Brighton Fringe Festival in May.

Pink Night is an event close to our hearts. We hold this event every year since 2009 in order to raise money for Mentor UK. This charity focuses on raising awareness of drug and alcohol misuse amongst children and young people.
We are proud to represent this charity and create this event for Hester Stewart. She was a Waves cheerleader who used to study at Sussex University. In 2009 she took a legal high at our awards evening and unfortunately died as a result of this. The main objective of this night is to raise as much awareness for the charity as possible and honor Hester.
The event is based on the colour pink as this was Hester's favorite colour which is why we encourage everyone to wear pink on the night and it is also incorporated into our uniform.

Our event takes place in Pryzm, a large nightclub venue where we set up stalls. These stalls sell food such as Papa Johns pizza, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and pick and mix sweets. We also sell raffle tickets. All the food and raffle prices have been donated from different shops in Brighton after going around and asking for support. We offer face paint, glitter and temporary tattoos.
We also go around with buckets during the night asking for any loose change or donations for the charity.
We decided to organise it in Pryzm as is one of the biggest club/nightouts in Brighton attended by students.
Most of the people who attended participated in some way by either entering the raffle, paying for glitter/face paint, buying food, donating change to our money buckets and many people came wearing pink!
We also offered the sale of pink waves t shirts where a proportion of the sales went towards the overall total. A donation page was also set up for anyone that could not attend and is still open for donations:
We also have raised awareness for the charity through participation. From these activities, we managed to raise over £485, a record-breaking amount!
We have all learned that it is important to understand that many substance/drugs are legal but without proper understanding they can be very dangerous and seriously impact people's health, and it is vital to raise awareness to all the students who don’t know much about it. Therefore, we decided to organize our event on a student night.
The aim of our event is to make people understand they must be careful when dealing with substances which may be legal but can have a devastating impact. Students don’t know much about these topics and they tend to have the curiosity and the desire to try them. Therefore, we hope that our event benefits students in terms of responsiveness towards general drugs.

So over the first two weeks of Freshers week, Brighton CU put on event every day (if not every other day) to try and reach students on campus, make them feel welcomed, and to share what our society is all about! We held a range of events; from open mic nights (collaborating with the Music Society), free donut stalls on the Falmer and Moulsecoomb campus, games night, movie night, Sunday church searches, grub crawls, beach barbecues, and so much more! You can see our timetable below of how hectic our two weeks were! Although it was tiring for our committee and CU members, it was so worth it! We loved meeting students, sharing glimpses of the light that we find in Jesus, and making freshers feel welcomed into their new home. Since Fresher’s Fortnight, we have been meeting as a society every Thursday, gathering for bible studies, prayer evening, and soon-to-be hosting our pumpkin carving social! We love meeting new students, holding discussions on faith with others, and sharing stories of what God has done in our lives. It’s been a great month to answer questions, serve our campuses, and explore more about what we believe with people from many different walks of faith.
Brighton CU love to tire ourselves out, and our events for Fresher’s Fortnight took place from Sep 25th-Oct 8th. Our aim was to host as many events as possible over the Fresher’s fortnight, giving students alternative activities to join in with, or effortlessly find us on campuses throughout the day. After this, we have been meeting every Thursday. Brighton Christian Union’s new Thursday schedule allows people of all backgrounds and areas of faith to participate.
As mentioned previously, our September events have been crazy! A lot has been going on all over the University campuses. Our first event we held on the 25th Sept, hosting a movie night for our CU members from last year to come back, re-mingle, and share the vision of the year ahead to get on board and excited for what’s to come! This was held at one of our co-president’s houses.
On Wed 27th Sept, we held a free donut stall on the Moulsecoomb campus, Cockcroft building, just by the main reception area. This was really successful (I mean, who doesn’t love free food?) and helped us meet new students floating around, help them with any questions they had about University, and also share who we are and what we do as a society.
Thurs 28th Sept we had our fresher’s fair! It was fantastic to see so many students bustling around, and was great to hand out our free mugs, food, leaflets, and more.
After fresher’s fair, we held a games night in the Huxley building, Moulsecoomb campus. This was so much fun, and was great to kick off our first official CU event with so many students walk through the door! Around 30 students showed up ready to have a night of fun and games with us!
Fri 29th Sept, we held our famous beach barbecue event just to the left of the palace pier. Student’s loved sitting by the sea, and making friends right at the heart of Brighton town. Lots of food and lots of fun! Over 35 students showed up, which was a fantastic turn out!
Sun 1st Oct was the first day of our church search event! We met students in different café’s before church services began, just so the experience of visiting church for the first time was less daunting and that they had a friendly face to come along with them to show them around. We visted Calvery Evangelical Church in the morning, followed by a free lunch provided by the church for us after the service, and then we visited St Peter’s church in the evening, again followed with free food afterwards (so much free food over the 2 weeks!)
Mon 2nd Oct we held our ‘Paint-Relief’ event at the Grand Parade campus just beside the canteen. This was a space for students to come by, relieve any stresses, worries, or anxieties they may have had about moving to University and the year ahead, and make friends whilst painting. We met lots of students who just really enjoyed being creative and found the painting as a great outlet to their worries. It was also great for us to help clear any more questions and worries about University life with them.
Tues 3rd Oct we held another free donut stall on the Falmer campus in the Checkland building. Meeting lots of students as they walk to and from classes, and had great conversations about faith, our society, and University life. This was also used to advertise our 2nd official CU meeting, and our open mic night.
Also on Tues 3rd, we held our joint event night with the Music Soc, hosting an open mic night at The Hive, Falmer campus. This was really fun to meet students, hang out, and play some music! It was also a really great experience to make friends with the music soc, and share their passion for students. 15-20 students arrived at The Hive that evening, and made great friends with all who turned up!
Thurs 5th Oct, we had our 2nd CU meeting. From 6-7pm we held a prayer&worship session at The Hive, Falmer campus, allowing both Christian and non Christians to come together, and experience prayer & the joy of the lord! From 7-8:30, we had our guest speaker from UCCF come in to talk about ‘How to find Light in the Wilderness’, along with FREE PIZZA! We had 20-30 students come along to this event, and it was so lovely to see how much fun everyone had! Great night of making friends, sharing stories of faith, and helping others find light in their lives! The SU staff were super supportive of our society, which was incredibly encouraging to us.
After our event, we travelled out to Varley Park for our ‘text-a-toastie’ event from 9-11pm. This involved us making free toasties for students in halls in exchange of questions they had on faith, Christianity, the bible, God, and more. A great night of food, conversations, and making friends on campus!
Saturday 7th Oct, we held our grub crawl event, which involved us inviting student’s we’ve met throughout the week round to our houses for lunch and dinner. Although the events had been fun throughout the week, coming together and having a meal together was a great way to really get to know students, build deeper friendships, and fully welcome them to our society.
Sunday 8th Oct was our last event of Freshers fortnight. We had our last two church searches, which took place at Holland Road Baptist Church, and Church of Christ The King. Same as the previous week, we met students in café’s before the church services began, and were blessed with free food from the churches after the services.

It may take a while to go into full detail of each event. However, to summarise, most of our events allowed students to come into a place, feel welcomed, make friends, and participate with games, music, FREE FOOD, and socials. It also allowed students to ask questions about Christianity, and to learn more about our faith with one another.
We learnt that running an event every day/ every other day can be incredible tiring! But… all of the hours were so worth it. We love meeting students and making them feel like Brighton is their home. We also learnt how open people were to having conversations about faith, regardless of what people believed in. It has been a great month of getting to know students, and show the love that we have for Jesus, and the love He has for us!
We feel that the past month has benefited students in terms of making them feel welcomed, growing new friendships, and going home with full bellies from all the free food we’ve offered! Our society creates a space on campuses for students to feel loved, valued, and opening room for them to ask questions on faith, and feel comfortable to talk about subjects of faith with others. We are so excited for our weekend away in Winchester together at the end of the month, and for the rest of the year to come!

Arabsoc has held several events since we started last year. Our most popular events were when we started off our academic year by inviting all our members to a meet and greet bonfire by the beach. The aim of this was for our new members that had signed up from fresher’s fair to come along and all get introduced to one another. The aim was for our members to make new friends, learn more about our society and for everyone to enjoy themselves with the fire going to provide warmth and music playing in the background to ease people. It was a great success and we were delighted to hear good feedback. Another of our events that gave us rave reviews was our cultural night. This was a night filled with entertainment and the objective was for everyone to just enjoy themselves for a night away from uni stress. We wanted to do something different. This night included shisha for those who pleased and for those who are not fans there was a variety of Arab foods, dessert and soft drinks available along with Arabic music playing throughout the night. We also hired a belly dancer who got everyone hyped up and encouraged people to come a little out of their shells. This night was such a success and we had many requests to do it again. So, we did. This time we joined with the Greek society from Sussex who after hearing about our cultural night wanted to collaborate with us in hosting another. This event was MUCH bigger. A professional belly dancer, a tabla performer, a DJ, shisha, and of course an Arab favourite, in which no event would be a success without…humus and baklawa for people to snack on throughout the night. The objective of this event was to get everyone together again and see all our lovely members and provide them with a night where they would meet their friends, destress and enjoy.
The next event we wish to host will be something for us to give back. Our society has been a great success for a new society that only started up in 2015/2016. We are planning to use money raised from our events to organise a homeless run. This event is planned to take place hopefully this month before we all break for Easter hols and we will surely keep you posted.

Everyone came with a great attitude and a desire to meet new people and socialise. They were a crucial part in the success of our events. They interacted well with another. A lot of people came early and help set up and lots of people brought props to decorate.
Arabsoc have learned to work together through a big community of people from various nationalities and backgrounds. We have also learned how to organise ourselves, our events, and to work together in challenging situations.
It benefited lots of different students from different cultural backgrounds to come together and see/learn about the arab culture e.g. food, music, entertainment aspects. It is also hugely beneficial for students to get together and socialise in a warm, nice atmosphere that is welcoming and has a little something for everyone.

All of February was LGBTQ+ History month and so we wanted to run events all throughout the month remembering and honouring LGBTQ+ History. Of the many events that we held, the five shown here are:

The objective of each event was to incorporate LGBTQ+ History into engaging events. This would allow members to learn about our communities past but in an engaging way, along with providing a safe space for members to ask questions and raise any questions/experiences.
As mentioned, the events ran all throughout February. A calendar has been put up on the SU website with all of the specific dates.

Participation varied with each event. For example, 30 people came to the Murder Mystery whereas around 10 came to the guided walk.

Sports Day- In collaboration with Parklife, we set up numerous sporting events around Cockroft hall. We started with different stations where people paired up and competed for the highest score. Next, we all split up into teams and played classic primary school style games such as the egg and spoon race, sack race etc. and then we rounded off the evening with UV dodgeball.
Guided Walk- Members were taken on a tour around Brighton, being informed of Historical LGBTQ+ Places and venues. Attendees were allowed to ask questions at any point.
Bake Sale- Attendees helped set up and sell products.
Committee Meeting/Round Off- We reflected on the month, raising what was good about the month and what could have been improved. We also discussed the upcoming month and checked in with the society members.
Murder Mystery- The Hive was turned into a giant cludeo board, with members being assigned a historical LGBTQ+ Person complete with costume and character profile. Attendees threw a giant dice around the Hive and essentially played Cluedo.
Myself and members learnt about numerous historical people in LGBTQ+ History. We ran a daily social media campaign highlighting LGBTQ+ Figures and bios were given at the Murder mystery night to give background to the characters. With the guided walk, attendees learnt about Brighton's LGBTQ+ History and where the venues are located.
The events we ran benefitted students as they provided students, LGBTQ+ or not, with an opportunity to learn about the community and it's history. Our events encouraged engagement with all types of students, allowing them to come together to learn, participate and support each other. Our events also provided a safe space for students to raise any problems they are having and to release any stress that they may be experiencing, uni related or otherwise.

The objective of our Event was to ensure that everybody enjoyed Valentine's Day regardless of whether they were single or not. Also to send 5 pairs on a date.

We had around 75 people that attended.
8 of the attendees sat on the panel as single ladies & 5 of them as single men. The rest were the audience and they interacted with the host.
We learnt that Women don't like to be referred to as girls.
Our event benefited people as we brought together, first years, second years and third years to have an eventful evening & enjoy valentines day together. Also we got 4 couples together, with a date inclusive.

The objective of the event was to bring together the three years of biology students in Hastings and to run a Human Biology trip. Also, with our screenings of Planet Earth II – bring together Hastings students from all courses.
Planet earth II was weekly during the showings and the trip to the Royal College of Surgeons was on the 14.12.2016
The screenings were shown in the Havelock lecture theatre and the trip to Royal College of Surgeons and Winter Wonderland – Hyde Park - was in London.
The trip to London brought 24 biology students and the planet earth screenings varied per week but with a maximum 15.
Within the museum there was the opportunity for the attendees to practice their surgery skills on realistic skin, experience the festiveness of Winter Wonderland and had the opportunity - who without our society - wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet and socialise with peers from other year groups.
A more in depth understanding of human physiology and anatomy as well as getting to know our peers from other year groups.
It provided a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain access to a museum that has never been seen before by non-medical students. Where there were genuine human tissue samples on display – which provides a different aspect of learning and a more realistic idea of human anatomy. Unfortunately, we could not take many pictures as we were abiding by the Human Tissues Act.

Guide dogs is an important charity to support as it helps many partially sighted and blind people live their lives normally. It is also popular among our members, with one of our committee members having sponsored a guide dog for more than two years. We organised a Christmas bake sale and did our best to advertise it around the uni so we could raise a lot of awareness for the charity. We organised for Graham and his guide dog Bassey to be with us throughout the day so people could ask him questions and found out more about the charity from someone that knows a lot about it.
Our event took place on the 9th of December from 9am to 5pm.
Our event took place opposite the SU office in Cockcroft.
We had around 10 members involved in the bake sale and around 200-350 people buy bakes and knitted goods, as well as visiting Bassey and donating.
Our members baked for the sale as well as helping run the stall. Everyone else was involved either by buying baked goods, knitted items or participating in our lucky dip. And of course, everyone was very interested in petting Bassey and giving him lots of love and attention. A lot of people wanted to donate to Guide Dogs, even if they hadn't bought anything, and this amounted to a grand total of £376.94 which is a Baking Society record!
We learned that raising awareness for the charity is very important as donations are vital for it to run smoothly. We also learned how to organise the space efficiently when there are large numbers of people around and how to deal with situations when animals are present i.e. having hand sanitizer available and making sure he has enough room to be comfortable. We found that selling home made things, such as hats and hot chocolate cones, were very popular and people enjoyed them. We trialled selling ticketed events for our next session and found this to work effectively. We realised how important team work and communication between members is as we would not have been able to carry this out as well as we did without leaning on each other for support. Because of the amount we raised, we have now learnt how much we can aim to raise for next time.
We found that people were very happy to see us celebrating the holidays. They enjoyed interacting with us such as participating in the lucky dip, they were particularly excited to discover what they picked. They also enjoyed all the home made treats, one lecturer bought 10 of the same item so his students could enjoy them! And of course, everyone enjoyed seeing Bassey and giving him lots of love. We also feel this was good because it allowed students to momentarily de-stress and forget about their upcoming assignments/exams.

The Homelessness Crisis in Brighton is an increasing and on-going problem. Our aim was to go around Brighton and feed the homeless community with homemade food parcels and understand their stories and situation.
#4 How many people came? & #5 How did the attendees participate?
Some of our members went to Sainsbury’s to buy bread, a selection on fillings (ham, cheese, tuna & sweetcorn), fruit and veg, snacks (the obligatory chocolate bar), juice and dog food, as the number of homeless dogs owners has grown in turn with the increased rate of homelessness in Brighton. We then went to another members home to make 40 food parcels, all of which we gave out by splitting into 2 groups and offering them to people sleeping rough within city centre.
We learnt about the extent of homelessness in Brighton and how big the housing problem is. Furthermore, it gave us an insight into the difficulty of life on the streets particularly in the winter. It changed our attitude towards the homeless, they weren’t all lazy, work shy, alcoholics and drug addicts.
Homelessness can happen so quickly to anyone. We met a large variety of people, from the young to the old, those who came to the UK seeking a better life but found themselves homeless instead and veterans who went to war to find their houses repossessed.
We anticipated a few negative responses but all those we gave packages to were incredibly warm, friendly and grateful.
CONGRATULATIONS to Pharmacy Society Society for winning Society of the Month for October. Here's what they had to say about the event they ran that bagged them the award.
To get pharmacy (and non-pharmacy) students from all years to socialise, mingle and kick the year off in style! We wanted to also raise awareness of our society and make sure students knew what we do and that studying Pharmacy isn't all about patients and drugs but that they can have a good time too. We like the motto 'Work Hard, Play Harder!' and this was definitely seen throughout the crawl!! We wanted to integrate the year groups by building bridges between year groups, allowing students to meet new people and make friendships!
Thursday 13th October from 7:30pm until 4:00am
The first bar was Revolution on West Street, followed by Pitcher and Piano then Dirty Blonde and we ended up at The Haunt
We sold premium memberships and bar crawl wristbands and sold approximately 180 including those sold on the night!
This event was a bar crawl so people participated by showing up and having a great time! Obviously there was drinking, dancing and singing. This event wasn't only for people who drink alcohol as we promoted that non-alcohol drinkers were welcome - our main aim was to meet new people! Attendee's bought a premium membership or a crawl wristband to identify themselves as with PharmSoc!
Attendee's also participated through taking photos on Snapchat - the well known social media for which we organised a personalised filter -see picture. This was received very well!!! We thought this made our crawl unique as we believed it had not been done before and had a personalised touch to social media!
Lastly, we ran a photo competition to give one attendee the chance to win a prize - which is a free ticket to our next event - The Staff Student Challenge. Students sent us their favourite picture of the event and we chose the best one to win the prize.
We created and sent out a feedback form and had a number of responses. Elements of the form include how would you rate venue x, how would you rate the music, please provide any comments. This way we had constructive criticism and now know what to do better next time.
From our feedback form, 100% of students would attend another bar crawl with PharmSoc - GREAT NEWS!! So we know that people will come again and that they had a great time! Attendee's said the deals were great and they thought it was good value for money - so we saved them money through good prices.
Students may have been put slightly outside their comfort zone in terms of meeting new people and new areas but new friendships were made. Also, we had the competition to win a free ticket to SSC so attendees had the chance to enter that - who doesn't love free stuff!! The places on the crawl may have been new to first years so they could explore various venues and we kept it current with a snapchat filter so attendees could show their friends! Just because we are an academic society doesn’t mean we cant have fun!! The atmosphere was incredible and the committee are delighted to how successful it was!
