2021/01 January - Occuational Therapy Society

CONGRATULATIONS to Occupational Therapy Society winners of Society of the Month!

January Winners - Occupational Therapy Society

NAME OF EVENT - Placement check in

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE EVENT -

We have held 2 events with the same function, just for different cohorts (although others were able to attend also to get to know people that are not on the same course). The events were held while OT students were on placement, they took place on the first Wednesday of each cohorts placement in order to provide a space where students can support one another, share ideas, share experiences and feel able to see a familiar face in what can be a highly stressful and emotional time.

HOW DID THE ATTENDEES PARTICIPATE?

Attendees participated via zoom and were able to support one another, catch up and talk through their successes and concerns about their first ever placement experience. (Number of participants unknown due to not planning on applying for society of the month at the time, the function of the event was to support one another rather than to achieve a high number of attendees).

WHAT DID YOU LEARN?

We learned from each other's experiences and were able to apply it to our own placements. We also started to build a sense of community within the society, understanding that we are all willing to support one another.

HOW DID THE EVENT BENEFIT STUDENTS?

It offered students a safe place to destress, share their excitement, concerns, give advice, and also try to work out the paperwork provided by the university! Being a first time on placement for many students, a lot of us felt a range of emotions from excitement, under pressure, worry, joy, anxiety. With students entering placements that potentially could expose them to covid, it allowed students to hear from each other what was being put in place to keep themselves safe and maybe carry this into their own placements.
