Bright ‘n’ Green is an exciting and innovative new student led programme, which will put students right at the heart of sustainability. The Students’ Union has just recruited four postgraduate students to paid internships with the organisation, who will lead on different areas of Bright ‘n’ Green.

The two year programme will harness the collective power of Brighton students as green champions for change, both at the University, and in your own lives. Through connecting sustainability issues with student employability, we will be helping you to leave university with the necessary skills to influence and shape green commerce, enterprise and employment strategies in the workplace.

For example, a recent business survey found that seven in ten businesses consider sustainability to be a priority business driver for success, and also that the majority of businesses have repositioned sustainability as a ‘need-to-have’ rather than a ‘nice-to-have.’[1]

So learning ‘green skills’ is not just about saving the environment, but will also put you at an advantage in your future choice of career.

There will be a wide range of different ways for you to get involved with Bright ‘n’ Green to improve your employability skills, including:

  • Paid internships and team challenges with local businesses.

  • Volunteering opportunities to improve the sustainability of student accommodation.

  • Business coaching to develop plans & ideas for student co-operatives.

  • Getting involved in setting up a Bike Co-op on campus.

  • Taking part in an alternative travel and transport challenge.

  • Opportunities to share the learning from what students are doing across all campuses.

The student interns will be starting in their roles as Project Co-ordinators in January 2014, and want to find out your ideas for how you can get involved in and shape the Bright ‘n’ Green programme.

So keep an eye out for local events on your campus, as they’ll be visiting all five campuses in Eastbourne, Hastings and Brighton in the new year.

“I am excited about being part of the Bright ‘n’ Green Project because it gives the opportunity for students to be decision makers, and has at its core the importance of community engagement and dialogue. This project is like Lego, where each stakeholder brings different building blocks and we put them together in new ways, to build a greener and more sustainable Students’ Union.”

"Brighton Students Union is an organization that really believes in bettering the lives of its students, and the Bright ‘n’ Green programme has the potential to impact all aspects of students' lives.  I am incredibly excited to be a part of this important work, and I hope to help as many students as I can while I'm here.  Sustainability is one of my core passions, and I'm ready to apply that passion to making the student experience more sustainable, both now and in the future."

Funded by the NUS Students’ Green Fund, Bright ‘n’ Green is a two year project run by University of Brighton Students' Union.
