The University of Brighton Students' Union provides paid work and volunteering opportunities for University of Brighton students, as well as the occasional established staff role. Please see below for details of current vacancies.

Our aim is to offer as many students opportunities for employment as we can. We employ student staff for a wide variety of roles across the SU. We have cafés, shops and SU Receptions on most campuses, all employing regular student staff. We also have additional ad hoc work at various times throughout the year.

The standard student staff rate is £7.50 per hour, with a higher rate paid for those working in a supervisory role. We are committed to paying above minimum wage.

There are many benefits to joining our team of Student Staff. Work is predominantly based on campus and can fit around student timetables and study commitments. As well as offering regular work we also offer many ad hoc opportunities to work at our events and activities, which provide a great way to get involved and gain valuable work experience.

We have limited the number of hours students can work for us during term time to 15 hours per week. This limit is agreed with the University as a comfortable number of hours which will not impact on study time.

Our aim is to offer as many students’ opportunities for employment as we can so, by limiting the number of hours an individual student can work, we provide more opportunities for more students.

We offer all new regular and ad hoc opportunities, in the first instance, direct to our current team of student staff. However, scheduling our student staff timetables with the work available can be difficult so we often need new students to join our team.

Our busiest time of year for new recruits is the start of the academic year when we hire new regular staff for most student staff roles across the BSU. We hold our main recruitment drive before the start of the autumn term so we can get new student staff on board, trained and ready for the start of the new academic year.

We get hundreds of applications each year - three times more than we can place - we can’t offer everyone a job every time. For this reason we keep all applications on file for the remainder of the academic year. When a new job comes up we look at these applications and contact the most suitable candidates via their uni email address. For this reason it’s really important to complete the application form in full and include as much information about your work experience as you can.

Yes, depending on the terms of your visa. We are required to check the eligibility of every potential employee to work in the UK, regardless of nationality, so we will need to see and take a copy of your passport and visa, if you have one, before you start. We require visas to be valid for at least 3 months from the date of employment. Most student visas allow work 20 hours per week during term time. All employers in the UK have a statutory obligation to check – and retain a copy of – the eligibility of every employee. If we don’t we are liable for a fine. This means we will need a copy of your passport or birth certificate before you start work with us. If you are from outside either the EEA (European Economic Area) or Switzerland, then we will also need to see copies of your current visa. All visas and passports must be valid for at least 3 months at the date we employ you, unless you are a British passport holder, in which case an expired passport is permitted.

Providing this proof is a condition of employment; we cannot employ you without it and we cannot put you on the payroll. When you are offered work with us you will be asked to complete a starter form and provide proof you can work here legally. Please be prepared and bring it with you!

Student Staff, Various Roles

Brighton Students' Union is recruiting! We’re looking for students to join our 2017/18 pool of student staff.

Joining our pool of student staff is a great way to gain experience, get involved in the Students' Union, make new friends and have fun whilst earning some much needed dosh! Work is on campus and often during Uni hours so can fit around student timetables.

We are particularly looking to those with a couple more years of uni ahead, who we can train and develop to work with us for the duration of their course. We offer up to 15 hours p/wk with opportunities to train to become a supervisor and earn more.

We have a variety of roles available across many of our campuses:

- Cafe/Bar Assistant (minimum commitment of 8 hours per week)

- Shop Assistant (minimum commitment of 8 hours per week)

- General Admin Assistant (various hours), limited opportunities

- Other ad hoc work, such as Freshers’ Fair Crew

Contraception and Sexual Health Drop-in Worker

Salary: £8.20 per hour.

The role of CaSH Drop-In Worker is to run the campus based sexual health drop-ins which will run weekly on Falmer and Moulsecoomb campuses. This involves conducting short consultations in order to issue students with the Brighton Students’ Union Condom Card, which is called the BrightSex Card, offering Chlamydia/Gonorrhoea screening, providing free take-away pregnancy tests, offering support and advice on safer sex and drug and alcohol harm minimisation and signposting students to relevant local sexual health and drug and alcohol services.

Health and Wellbeing Team Supervisor

Salary: £8.20 per hour.

We are currently looking for Paid Health and Wellbeing Campaign Team Supervisors to join our team and be responsible for supervising volunteers on our outreach sessions, for both the CaSH and PEACH campaigns that take place over the year. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop the successful applicant’s project management skills, the ability to supervise volunteers and essential transferable skills such as communication, team work and organisation.

Health and Wellbeing Assistant

We are currently looking for an Assistant who, with the support of the Health and Wellbeing Co- ordinator, will help organise sexual health, drug and alcohol and mental health promotion events and campaigns, write content for and manage our social media accounts, provide admin support to Students’ Union staff to deliver CaSH and PEACH services, and provide admin support to process completed Chlamydia screens throughout the academic year. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop the successful applicant’s project administration skills, their ability to support volunteers and essential transferable skills such as communication, team work and organisation.

The Health and Wellbeing Assistant will receive full training and induction into the role, as well as on-going support and supervision.

Brighton Students' Union Established Staff Recruitment

Brighton Students' Union has a dedicated group of established staff who help carry out the many functions of our organisation. There are a variety of roles within the SU, meaning that our job vacancies are always exciting and different.

Venue Manager, The Starting Gate Café-bar, Eastbourne

37 hours per week, including some evenings and week-ends, term time only (Sept – June)

Brighton Students’ Union is a dynamic student-led, not-for-profit charity. Our mission is to improve student experience at the University of Brighton through the provision of excellent services, facilities and events.

We are looking for an exceptional Venue Manager to work with us at our Café-bar located on the Welkin Campus in Eastbourne. Working mainly Monday to Friday, but also some weekends and evenings, you will ensure the adequate operation of the Union Café-Bar areas during opening times. This is a challenging role, ensuring the adequate daily operation of the Café-Bar. Furthermore, you will be expected to increase footfall to the venue and engage with customers through effective marketing and promotion of products and offers. You will also be working closely with our Events Manager to develop a calendar of both regular and signature events

Working with student staff, you will also be managing the overall operation of the Café-Bar during evenings and week-ends. You will also know how to run a pub food offer and be familiar with food safety and licensing legislation and have a talent for developing and motivating staff.

Our ideal candidate should be enthusiastic and hard-working and keen to drive the business in a positive direction.

Brighton Students' Union Trustee Recruitment
