Be part of #BSUCourseReps

Course Reps are an essential link between students and staff. By finding out their fellow students' views about the course and then discussing these views with staff—both informally and at staff/student meetings, Course Reps ensure that the University take into account the views of students and help improve and develop their course. You can read more here about becoming a Course Rep.

Emma's experience

Hi, I'm Emma and I'm a third-year undergrad student studying Biomedical Sciences.

What skills have you gained from being a Course Rep?

  • The ability to effectively communicate to a wide group of people both peers and academic staff.
  • The ability to address concerns with limited knowledge without creating panic or handing out misinformation.
  • Time management and organisation skills to effectively balance my studies, working a part time job and my course rep duties.

What change have you made by being a Course Rep?

  • As a team, we addressed key concerns surrounding exams and grading such as inconsistency throughout modules. We helped get information about grading back to the cohort to address concerns.
  • We also dealt with the worries from students that surrounded coronavirus lockdown and online teaching and were able to pass this on to the correct people so that information was communicated effectively and in a timely manner.

Favourite thing about being a Course Rep?

  • Having the ability to have an impact not only on my course year but the years below us.
  • The opportunity to get to know more people on my course who I may not have interacted with otherwise.
  • The opportunity to work closely with academic staff that I would not have otherwise and in turn developed a set of skills that will help me in the future.

Why did you become a Course Rep?

  • So I could effectively influence changes to my course to benefit both me and my peers, and to develop my skillset in a unique manner.

Mihaela's experience

Hi I'm Mihaela and I'm an undergraduate student studying Applied Psychology and Sociology.

What skills have you gained from being a Course Rep?

  • I gained skills such as organisation, leadership, responsibility and of course, communication.

What change have you made by being a Course Rep?

  • I made sure no feedback was unheard. I brought up various issues such as lecture slides not being posted on time or requests for students to have physical prints of their reading.

Favourite thing about being a Course Rep?

  • My favourite thing about being a Course Rep was the opportunity to host social events. We hosted a Quiz Night where students studying the same course but in different years could meet and have fun.

Why did you become a Course Rep?

  • I became a Course Rep to get more involved with the University community as well to get to know more people, which is so important especially in the first year. I made friends with Course Reps from other courses. Can't forget the free hoodie as well!
