This week we talked to Ex-SU President, Hayley Wood about her time in the role. Here is what she had to say about being President:
Why did you decide to run for your position?
I decided to run for this position to take a break from my studies, and to use the year to do something productive.
I’m friends with some ex-officers so through talking to them I saw the benefits of the position and saw the opportunity to make things better.
What aspects of the role were you most excited about?
I was most excited about making a significant change for students.
What did you enjoy the most when doing your role?
Seeing students benefit from the changes I helped to make. Also meeting a wide range of people through the role, along with my friendships made with the team and others.
What advice would you give to somebody running for this position?
The position is not easy, but very rewarding. Be prepared for it to take up a lot of your life, but remember to enjoy and have fun with it!
In terms of campaigning, I would say people should be realistic about what can be achieved in the time in office and have a solid campaign plan.
What are you up to now?
I’m completing my third year of my degree part-time right now, alongside working in the SU shops. I also work in the universities disability and dyslexia team as an academic support worker supporting students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties.
In the future, I’d like to work for a charity or international organization and use the skills and knowledge I gained as president to continue to grow my skills.
